OUTLOOK

Members of the Mustang High School family can’t help be sound excited when they talk about the upcoming season and the prospects of the Lady Broncos and their potential to do something special this season. Head coach Katie Bass said the team returns several keys players who are difference makers on and off the court.

“We are super excited about this upcoming season for girls’ basketball! Not only do we return four starters, we have a group of returners who did not see much action last year, who are eager to make a huge impact for us,” said coach Bass.

This season coach Bass has changed a few things up and the team is responding well.

“This pre-season, we changed the way we prepared our team by putting them through various tough activities to test and push them beyond their physical and mental capabilities. Our hashtag this year is #BDM which stands for “Big Dawg Mentality.” We want our girls to recognize that no matter what challenges they face on and off the court, they have it in them to face the difficulties with a strong mental approach; to not run from challenges like a “little dog”, but to conquer them like a “big dog,” coach Bass said.

Mya Alston (6-1, Jr.) is a highly recruited player who makes her return to the court for the Lady Broncos. Alston is a shooting guard/small forward who can play excellent defense and is a VYPE Top 100 selectee this year. Cherish Haywood (Sr.) has committed to Radford University and will play forward for the Broncos again this season.

“This year, we are going to expect big things from senior Cherish Haywood and junior Mya Alston. We believe those two will have the best seasons of their careers,” said coach Bass.

Christal Long (Sr.) is another player who can crash the boards and push the pace for the Lady Broncos.

“We will also expect huge contributions from seniors Christal Long and Eliana Valentin- Florence, and sophomores Paige Fulmer and Lovely Haywood. We will be looking forward to the growth of juniors Ehryana and Rodryana Boykins, Gabby Sollano and Reese Poage,” said coach Bass.

Lovely Haywood (So.) is the fourth Haywood to come through the Mustang program. All of her siblings have played DI basketball and Lovely has the potential to be one of the best. Seeing Lovely and Cherish play together will be fun to watch.
