El Reno’s Izzy Birdsong

El Reno senior Izzy Birdsong has been around softball for most of her life. She started at just four years old, and by junior high, she was already competing in school ball. Now in her 12th-grade season she is looking forward to a successful year!

When it comes to influences her parents are at the forefront.

“They never give up, and I’ve always wanted to be like them,” she said.

They are a driving force to be the best she can be.

At school, she admits her favorite subject is lunch, but if she had to choose, it would be science. She likes the projects, and her favorite teacher, Mr. Kipp, because “he’s chill and explains stuff well.”

Softball has always been a family thing for her, and it was her cousins, Reese and Ryah, who first inspired her to play. Over the years, she’s also looked up to teammates, like Maddie Moss.

“She always had a positive attitude and worked hard at whatever she was doing,” she said.

When it comes to being the loudest on the team, she says that title easily goes to Shakayla, who keeps the energy high every game.

When she’s at the plate, her mindset is focused.

“I think about the situation and what I can do to help the team. Then I clear my mind and just think ‘hit, hit, hit’ until I recognize it’s a ball. My body already knows the mechanics.”

She plays outfield now and plans to stick with it. This year she’s noticed the growth of teammate Bray Pawnee.

“She’s worked her way up to varsity and made some clutch plays for us,” she said.

After graduation, she plans to play softball in college. With her dedication and mindset, she has a positive future ahead.
