Sharon Moreno, who will be a senior this year, said stepping into a leadership role on the varsity cheer squad is something she takes seriously. “As a senior on the cheer squad it is my job to be a leader and role model for the team, helping support and guide the younger girls. I try my best to set a positive example and motivate the team when it gets difficult. I would be nothing without my girls so working hard and helping them reach their full potential is the least I could do.”
The El Reno High School senior cheerleader Sharon Moreno still carries her former coach’s lessons with her every time she steps onto the sideline.
“The person that inspires me the most would probably be my old cheer coach Jacqueline Smith,” Moreno said. “She’s been with me since my freshman year and she left her position as cheer coach my senior year because she got a better opportunity. She was definitely my best friend, and I always went to her when I needed her most. She taught me that if you have a huge opportunity to follow your dreams do not let anything hold you back from going after it, especially not the comfortable. So even though she’s not my cheer coach anymore I carry her legacy with my head high and a huge ‘jacqy’ smile on my face while performing my little heart out because I couldn’t have made it this far without her.”

She said the best part of cheer is the people around her. “I definitely enjoy connecting with my teammates and the community the most, I’ve received so much love and support ever since I have joined this squad. I’ve also gained so many friendships and been given so many opportunities to teach what I love!”
Cheer has shaped how she sees herself far beyond the gym. “It has taught me that I am better than all the pressure and negative comments / thoughts I have about me. I’ve definitely grown my confidence and positivity when it comes to tough times, and in this world, you’ll always need a positive outlook of life.”
