Entering into the new season, the expectations for the Mustang softball team were high. Head coach Lacy Darity had several players returning and it was developing into what could be a great season. But no one could have predicted this team would be ranked No. 1 with a record of 20-0 as they entered the final stretch of regular season games.
Lexy Kierstead is one of the players helping the Lady Broncos make this a memorable season. An outfielder for the team, Kierstead said she loves playing in the outfield.
“I started playing softball when I was four, and I was not in any school just daycare,” Kierstead said. “I play the outfield right now, and I have played every position throughout my entire life. I love the outfield.”
With a team consisting of so many great players, it would be easy for egos to take over, but Kierstead said this team has great chemistry.
“I love how funny and understanding they are. They always know how to pick you up when you are down, and I love playing with them,” said Kierstead.
Softball is her focus, but Kierstead said she loves to show support to the other student-athletes playing sports at MHS.
“I am not in any other clubs or sports, but I do volunteer on my own time and also support every sport and I attend almost every sport game mustang has,” Kierstead said. “Mustang is amazing with being understanding about schoolwork and how busy we are. Our coaches are amazing and very helpful.”
Also a fastpitch player in the fall, Kierstead uses slow-pitch to her with her confidence on the field and her system is paying off.
“Slow-pitch gives me the confidence and makes me feel like I can do anything,” Kierstead said. “I think my strength is my IQ of the game and I think I can always get better on the mental aspect of the game.”
A source of inspiration on and off the field comes from someone she is close to at home.
“My inspiration is my mom. She is always my number one fan, and she always believes in me,” said Kierstead.
Away from the game, you can expect to find her hanging out with friends. This summer she will play more softball with her travel team in hopes to one day make it to the collegiate level.
“I enjoy spending it by shopping, hanging out with friends, and spending time with family,” Kierstead said. “My plan for the summer is to play travel ball with my friends and travel around the world. My goal is to go to college on an athletic scholarship and be an ultrasound tech for babies.”
