OUTLOOK
Graduation can cause a program to rebuild but for Piedmont High School and coach Joe Crawford, graduation did not take the normal toll on his team.
“We only graduated one senior. We have three seniors who will start. We return a lot of skills and a lot of experience. We have a few young players that are freshmen and sophomores who will contribute a lot,” coach Crawford said.
VYPE Top 100 selectee Kenley Crawford (5-9, Jr.) is a three-year starter and a junior captain. Crawford has several DII offers thanks to her ability to score and rebound. Crawford comes from a long line of outstanding players.
“She plays behind some big shoes of her three sisters who have gone on to play college. Kenley is a great athlete that will put up big career numbers when she graduates in two years,” coach Crawford said.
Najya Wilson (5-6, So.) will start at point guard where she has spent last season as a starter. She is a lockdown defender with a toughness not normally attributed to a point guard. Coach Crawford said Wilson can, “score from anywhere and gets downhill fast.”
Also look for Ava Watkins (5-11, Sr.), who coach Crawford calls a natural leader and a player who can play in the post or shoot the three. With schools recruiting her, Watkins is known as the “glue” of this team.
Other players to watch include Maci Bird (5-6, Sr.), Destiny Duffy (5-7, Sr.), Mackenzie Arney (5-7, Jr.), Lexi Daniels (5-5, Jr.), Bella Runge (5-10, Jr.), Megan Watkins (6-1, So.), Avery Davis (5-7, So.), Lucy Roop (5-9, So.), Taylor Warren (5-7, Fr.), Braelyn Ward (5-9, Fr.), Abby Desarden (6-0, Fr.). Team mangers are Cari Wyatt, Ella Uche-Abba, and Kyleigh Bruner.
