Piedmont’s Zoey Hughes – Volleyball Spotlight – Presented by WO Roll Offs

Throughout an athlete’s career, they make a large amount of memories, both during competition and just being around their team. While a lot of these memories are fun to look back at, some of them are bigger memories that stand out a little more. Zoey Hughes has made many great memories, but says that there is a recent one that is her favorite.
“There’s been several highlight moments in my time of playing,” she stated. “But the most vivid would be winning regionals this past year with Oklahoma Peak Performance 17-EP.”

Hughes, a senior at Piedmont High School, plays volleyball for the Wildcats. She has played several different positions during her time in the sport, but she is currently a middle blocker.

When Zoey and her teammates step out on the volleyball court, they are ready to face whoever is on the other side of the net. But she also says that she enjoys playing certain teams a little more.

“There is not one opponent that stands out to me the most,” she said. “But I love playing against my friends who go to different schools. The energy on the court is so much more intense.”

Hughes enjoys competing alongside her teammates and knowing that they all work hard to be successful.

“I love my team and the energy that volleyball brings to such a large gym,” she said. “I also love working with and against Mayli Whetter. She challenges me to stay disciplined and keep my eyes on the ball. One of the players who doesn’t get enough recognition is Sophie Payne. I think she’s an amazing all-around player, the only reason she doesn’t get recognized is because she’s a freshman.”

Throughout the season and offseason, Zoey put in a lot of work so that she can continually improve as an athlete.

“It takes lots of practice to be successful,” she stated. “Whether it’s being in the weight-room or going to practice with your team, you have to prioritize it.”
