Yukon’s Brekyn Mortensen – Presented by Roger Karns Shelter

Brekyn Mortensen is a senior outfielder for the Yukon Millers fastpitch softball team. Mortensen and her teammates have played some big games in the first half of the season, and they are looking forward to competing for a spot in the state tournament.

Mortensen said the team is hungry and looking to peak at the right time.

“The best way I could describe the Yukon softball team this year is alive. Everyone is so full of energy, hungry for the win. The atmosphere of our games is insane,” said Mortensen.

The team competed in the Hall of Fame Festival, which Mortensen calls her favorite tournament and location to play. The outfielder said she loves being around her teammates and the moments they share on and off the field.

“The moments we have before our games when there’s only seven of us, those are my favorite moments. Jenna Nowlin can always get a good laugh out of me. The most serious person is Margo Martinez, outside of softball she is chill but when it comes time to play, she’s completely locked in and focused on one thing, winning,” Mortensen said. “The coaches have a positive mindset but hold you accountable and push you to be the best you can be.”

In the classroom, Mortensen said she enjoys English class, and her favorite teacher comes from her elementary school days.

“My favorite subject is English because I love to write and my favorite teacher isn’t at Yukon High School, it’s my second grade teacher Mrs. Hoppe from Central Elementary,” said Mortensen.

The senior said the best advice she’s been given is, “You are your biggest supporter.” Mortensen is pushing herself to finish the year strong and possibly play at the next level while pursuing a degree and working towards becoming an X-ray technician.
