Yukon High School’s Kamiyah Porter is a unique combination of intelligence, athleticism and determination. Porter was a freshman last season, and her play left an impression on coach Roy Wyckoff.
“Kamiyah was the 6th man as a freshman last season and is looking to expand her role on the court,” said coach Wyckoff. “Kamiyah is a wing who can shift the momentum of a game with her versatility on both ends. She scores efficiently from all over the floor, whether pulling up from deep or slicing through traffic, and does so while keeping her teammates involved in the action.”
Her passion for the game spills into her love for her team and teammates.
“What I love most about my team and teammates is the family feel. We support each other on and off the court, push each other to get better, and celebrate each other’s wins. It feels good to be part of a group that truly cares,” Porter said.
Porter finds inspiration in the people who mean the most in her life.
“I’m inspired most by my family. My dad, my mother, my siblings, and my aunts and uncles. They each show me strength, love, and what it means to stay grounded. Their support and encouragement push me to keep working hard and to never give up on my goals or myself.
I’m also inspired by my coaches. They challenge me to grow, not just as an athlete but as a person. My family and coaches motivate me every day to be the best version of myself,” Porter said.
This season Porter is looking forward to challenging herself and improving with every game and becoming a smarter, more confident player. Making it to state and winning a state title is the goal. Her biggest surprise of her young career was realizing how much work it takes to be on top.
“The biggest surprise has been how much hard work and time really goes into getting better. From practices, workouts, film, and schoolwork it’s a lot. But it showed me how dedicated I can be,” Porter said.
Also a member of National Honor Society, Porter said her favorite subject in school is Geometry and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Cypert, her Accelerated English II teacher. Away from the court, you can usually find Porter hanging out with friends, watching television, shopping and sleeping.
