There are many attributes that go into an athlete becoming successful. While physical preparation is one of the most important, Yukon golfer Tyler Collins says that there is another aspect that has helped him grow into the athlete he is today.
“In order to be a successful athlete, I have had to fail,” he said. “Failing over and over again until I finally get it right. It may be rough at times, but it pays off in the long run. You also have to keep yourself motivated. My family, friends, and my competitive drive are what keep me focused on my goals.”
Collins is a senior at Yukon High School. Along with being a member of the golf team, he is also involved with DECA. Being in his final year of high school, Tyler already has a plan for after graduation.
“I plan to attend the University of Central Oklahoma and go into the PGA Golf Management Program. Eventually, I hope to own and run my very own golf course.”
Throughout his career, there have been many moments that have been important to Collins, but he says that his favorite moment would have to be a milestone.
“The highlight of my career would be when I won my first tournament competing in Guthrie,” he said. “It was a great feeling to see the hard work pay off.”
His favorite part about playing for Yukon is being able to step into the shoes of those that played before him.
“When I was little I used to watch the high school kids play and I couldn’t wait until the day I could represent Yukon,” he stated. “I am super competitive so seeing Yukon succeed just brings joy to me.”
Matt Olmsted is Tyler’s golf coach at Yukon and he says that Collins is more than just an outstanding golfer, he is also a solid teammate.
“He’s relentless in his work ethic to get better,” the coach said. “He’s encouraging to his teammates even when he’s not playing well. He has just the right amount of confidence to not be arrogant. Overall, he has the ability to be a special player for us this year.”
